Rodent Control Services

Mice are frequently portrayed as cute, lovable, harmless creatures. Many people even keep mice as pets. Unfortunately, mice, rats, and other rodents are known to carry diseases, ruin food stores, and damage property. Breathing air contaminated by mouse droppings has even been linked to the hantavirus. If you have unwanted rodents in your home, then rodent control is a must.

Mice and Rats

For most residential situations, mice are the most common rodent problem. The common house mouse is small with black eyes and can survive in your home for several years. They are capable of maneuvering quickly and can hide and travel in extremely cramped spaces. Mice tend to nest in hidden locations near food sources and can breed year round.
While rats and mice are not of the same genus, rats are very much like a larger version of mice. They share many of the same characteristics and pose the same problems to humans as mice. Due to their increased size they can do more damage in a shorter amount of time. Outside of large cities where rats are more exposed to dangerous elements, they do not pose any more of a significant threat to humans than mice.

Mouse Detection

Mice in particular can live in your home without visual detection. There are several things you can watch for to determine whether or not you have mice:

  • Mouse droppings
  • Torn or damaged food packaging
  • Other pets

Of these, mouse droppings are the most important. If you find mouse droppings, you should clean them up as quickly as possible, because they potentially carry the hantavirus. Mice will chew through boxes and plastic containers to get at the food inside. They will also use torn bits of cardboard, insulation, and fabric for their nests. Check storage areas such as attics and closets for signs of mouse damage. You can also watch other household pets for sign of mice: cats in particular may exhibit stalking behavior if they detect mice.

Mouse Traps

Mouse traps are by and far the most common way to rid your house of mice. There are several types of mouse traps:

  • Snap Traps – The traditional spring loaded mouse trap.
  • Live Traps – Considered to be the most humane, these mouse traps attempt to capture the mouse alive so that it can later be released unharmed.
  • Glue Traps – Largely considered inhumane due to the length of time the mouse can take to die, these mouse traps are also known to be potentially dangerous to humans and pets as well.

Mouse Poisons

Using a poison or any other chemical solution to your mouse problem is not recommended for the do it yourselfer. If you have a severe infestation that requires this level of intervention, please call us for an evaluation. We are trained and equipped to help you with any rodent problem you may have.
